There is a common misconception in material handling: if a pallet jack is used indoors, it automatically needs traditional polyurethane (poly) wheels. That is not always the whole story. The correct material depends on travel speed, load capacity, travel distance, warehouse environment, and floor condition.

Key Considerations for Indoor Warehousing

When Traditional Polyurethane Works Best

If the application matches those conditions, traditional polyurethane wheels are an excellent fit. They protect finished floors, provide manageable rolling resistance, and keep manual pulling effort relatively low.

What Changes in Damp Environments

Moisture changes the selection. Traditional cast-iron-core poly wheels can rust quickly, while repeated water exposure can accelerate polyurethane hydrolysis, delamination, and chunking. This shortens service life and increases maintenance.

Polyurethane on aluminum cores is a useful middle ground when quiet travel and corrosion resistance are both important. Rubber on aluminum cores adds grip and slip resistance on wet surfaces, although its higher rolling resistance requires more manual effort.

The Tread Profile Matters

Wheel treads are commonly flat or crowned. In tight spaces with frequent turns, a crowned tread reduces the contact area and turning resistance, helping reduce operator fatigue.

Information to Share

Share your requirements through our project inquiry form, and our technical team will help specify the right wheel for the application.

A drawing is useful, but the application information around the drawing is equally important.

Essential dimensions

Include outside diameter, width, bore, hub length, bearing specification and tolerances.

Application requirements

State the equipment model, wheel position, working load, speed, floor condition, operating temperature and chemical exposure.

Commercial information

Provide annual demand, order quantity, target packaging and private-label requirements.

Start wheel selection with the actual route the pallet jack travels, not only its rated load.

Smooth indoor concrete

Polyurethane or nylon wheels can both work well. Choose Polyurethane when lower noise and floor protection matter.

Rough or damaged floors

A resilient tread helps absorb vibration and protects bearings.

Wet or washdown areas

Review wheel material, bearing protection and corrosion exposure together.

Polyurethane and nylon solve different operating problems. The right choice depends on the floor, load and environment rather than color alone.

Polyurethane wheels

Polyurethane wheels provide quieter operation, good floor protection and useful grip.

Nylon wheels

Nylon offers low rolling resistance and high load capacity on smooth floors, but it is harder and usually produces more noise.

What to send for confirmation

Provide the pallet jack model, wheel position, dimensions, load and floor condition.

Measure the existing wheel before ordering, even when the equipment model is known.

1. Measure the outside diameter

Measure across the widest part of the tread. A worn wheel can be smaller than its original size, so record visible wear and send a photograph when possible.

2. Record width, bore and hub length

Measure the working tread width, the shaft or bearing bore, and the total installed hub length.

3. Confirm material and operating conditions

Specify Polyurethane, nylon or rubber together with floor condition, load, operating temperature and exposure to water or chemicals.
