Washdown rooms in food processing, pharmaceutical production, and cold storage can destroy standard warehouse wheels. Chemicals, grease, and thermal shock can swell tread materials and rust bearings solid, creating downtime and sanitation risks. A waterproof tread alone is not enough; the specification must combine material compatibility with total corrosion protection.
What Actually Damages Washdown Wheels?
- Chemical combinations: alternating sanitizers, bleach, and caustic cleaners can dissolve standard materials.
- Mixed grease: machine lubricants and animal fats combined with detergents accelerate tread swelling and delamination.
- Thermal shock: hot washdown water on cold wheels creates rapid expansion and can crack the wheel structure.
PTMEG Polyether Polyurethane vs. Cast MC Nylon
PTMEG Polyether Polyurethane
Standard polyester polyurethane can degrade through hydrolysis. PTMEG polyether polyurethane is engineered to resist water exposure, roll quietly, protect floors, and remain non-marking. It is best suited to frequent water washdowns and mild cleaners, but can swell slightly in heavy mineral oils and is not intended for strong bleach.
Cast MC Nylon
Where heavy grease is the primary hazard, cast MC nylon offers strong resistance to animal fats and mineral oils. It stays hard under heavy loads and resists absorption and softening. It is well suited to oily floors and cold-water washdowns, but can degrade under high-temperature washdowns above 60°C / 140°F or strong acids.
The Make-or-Break Factor: Total Corrosion Protection
Many washdown wheels are scrapped because the bearing rusts before the tread fails. Specify 304 or 316 stainless steel bearings with double rubber seals (2RS), plus stainless or corrosion-resistant cores, axles, spacers, and fasteners.
Quick Specification Guide
- Water + sanitizers + floor protection: PTMEG polyether polyurethane with sealed stainless bearings.
- Heavy grease + cold water + neutral cleaners: cast MC nylon with sealed stainless bearings.
